“It’s the most wonderful time of the year – With the kids jingle belling – And everyone telling you “Be of Good Cheer” – It’s the most wonderful time of the year…”
Don’t you just love that song? You hear it on almost every commercial and in all of the stores as you either start or complete your holiday shopping! No matter what kind of mood I am in it never fails, once I hear that song it just warms my heart and makes me want to spend money on holiday gifts for everyone.
As for me, I got a lot of my holiday shopping out of the way early this year, something I always plan to do, but never get around to. After a long night of bartending (and drinking, shhh!) at a nightclub where I worked Thanksgiving night, myself and a few coworkers dragged ourselves out to a local store at 5am, and braved the lines and hectic behavior on Black Friday. It was crazy to say the least, but I must admit I did catch some great sales and saved quite a bit of money. Funny, but I don’t think we were the only ones filled with “holiday spirits” either, and some if those folks weren’t, then well…let’s jut say I hope to never see them when they are inebriated!
Around this time of the year I tend to sit back and reflect on past holidays from childhood to adulthood. Every year I always think about my family and our traditional “Egg Nog.” I do not know what the great thing about Egg Nog is, but my family absolutely loves it. We always had two separate bowls, one labeled the “Adult Egg Nog” and the other labeled the “Children’s Egg Nog.” As kids growing up we knew not to touch the “Adult Egg Nog.” Thinking back, it was always funny to see the correlation between the adults’ behavior and the amount of decreasing Egg Nog, which brings me to a funny story that I have to share. I just hope my cousin doesn’t kill me when she reads this!
As kids no matter what we asked “Santa” for, we always had that, plus more under the tree. Now I cannot recall how old I was, but this particular year I wanted this doll named “Cricket.” She was the coolest doll, she had a tape deck in her back, and when you pressed play her mouth would move and she would say “Hi I’m Cricket, want to play?” When I opened that gift I was so excited, I loaded her up with batteries, popped in the tape, and left her talking all night. A few hours later the adults were probably on their second or third bowl of Egg Nog, and an older cousin was making her way into the living room, and low and behold Cricket was sitting under the tree. Some how some way, Cricket burst into her usual banter, talking up a storm. She was so freaked out she took off into the dining room confused and scared trying to figure out where this child came from sitting underneath the tree! Maybe she was a little tipsy but she was so scared she relieved herself on herself if you get my drift. We never let her forget that, it was just too funny!
Whatever holiday you celebrate, and whatever your traditional family cocktail you share, most importantly is that you enjoy it with friends and family! The holidays are a great time to reflect on old family memories, as well as create new ones!
Feliz Navidad, Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanza , and Happy Hanukah! And keep in mind to enjoy yourself but most importantly drink responsibly!! Check back next week when I offer a few fun (tip-building) drink suggestions for New Year’s Eve.
